Hearing protection works really well for this and I have found a child using them while reading to block out the distractions of the household! In order to get lost in their thoughts they walk in circles in the back field or take long showers. For me, mundane jobs like planing and sanding wood for a project or mowing and weed wacking are good times to get lost in my thoughts. But where do I find quiet from even the noise in my head, of the daily stressors like the todo lists, and unannounced issues? The best time I get regularly is while I drink coffee first thing in the morning before the household is awake. Although, the dogs think that is a great time for a walk…
Taking time to find that quiet is really important for our physical health. We rarely find time to really relax so that our body can take a breath. Technically, it’s switching our body from sympathetic to parasympathetic. In layman’s terms, it’s breathing deeply and focusing our attention in and around our heart, not letting the distractions of even the voice inside our heads to interrupt. Doing so on a regular basis will change your life drastically for the better. We have a room that is quiet from the everyday bustle and when I go there in search for that quiet, I tend to fall asleep. I guess that shows how busy life is and that I need to find that quiet more often.
Finding quiet for our mental health is just as important. Not to figure out an issue or replay an argument, but to find calm and peace. Shushing the voice inside our heads gets rid of more stress than most of the events in our lives. Listen in the quiet, a waterfall, the wind in the trees, or the sound of nature all around. Get away from the busy for a minute and you will find the quiet in the noise.
